THREAD Over the past few days I've been examining (with @Comparativist @28481k & others) the circumstances of the likely fatal falling by a Hong Kong University student on Sunday night. There are a LOT of questions. This map shows known police movements during the dispersal
@Comparativist @28481k This shows the police split up into the 3 squads we know were there, Blue, Green & Red. Blue & Green appeared at 12:25 on the cnr of Tong Ming/Tong Chun Sts. Green entered the car-park at around the time of the fall, but were ~110m away per CCTV footage.
@Comparativist @28481k Red squad is really interesting, they only appeared at 1:01 running down the street to the N (left) of the carpark. Importantly there were only ~30 cops in that squad compared to the usual 45.
@Comparativist @28481k Journalists should focus on that red squad and try to determine whether they split into two groups prior to the fall, and whether they were accompanied by a second squad that did not join green/blue. These (potential) police would likely be roughly across the street from the fall
@Comparativist @28481k According to video footage of the scene the fall happened here:
(that tree has been removed since street view).
Therefore it was my original hypothesis that those additional cops entered the carpark, went up the elevators to the 3rd floor and spooked the victim.
@Comparativist @28481k However, CCTV footage (vimeo.com/371312405/2020…) from C35 is really puzzling. It shows no movement around where the boy fell, other than a fire fighter passing by within 2min of the fall. Certainly no cops entering from the elevators.
@Comparativist @28481k Curiously, the victim isn't even visible as far as I can. There is this black-clad person, but they appear to walk down a ramp to the 2nd floor shortly after this screenshot.
@Comparativist @28481k Assuming this CCTV footage is legitimate, it pretty much rules out police pursuing or spooking the victim.
@Comparativist @28481k My current working theory (very tentatively) is that the victim had climbed on to the wall to get a better view of (or to throw stuff at) the (possible) 15 cops still stationed at that round-about and fell (slipped or spooked by a shout or a rubber bullet audible on streams).
@Comparativist @28481k Journalists need to ask the HKPF directly about that red-squad, whether it kept some officers back near the round-about behind the carpark where the boy fell, and whether that unit fired any less-lethal munitions during their clearance operation.
@Comparativist @28481k I believe this frame (C31) probably shows Mr. Chow before his fall. The figure is wearing what he was described as wearing, plus he walks up the ramp at 1:02:15am, has moved out of view from the upstairs CCTV by 1:02:50 and does NOT walk down the ramp again or along the 3rd floor
@Comparativist @28481k Curiously this CCTV footage cuts out at 01:10, a couple of minutes before riot police would show up on this camera. First-aider testimony says that police pointed weapons at them. That might be what this footage would show (everything else in that account is confirmed by CCTV)
@Comparativist @28481k The footage from C30 continues until 01:38 when the patient is removed. All other video released are 1 hour, C31 is only 32min. When riot cops reach the fall site (1:15) they just awkwardly loiter without doing anything much (good or bad), so if they do point weapons it's earlier
