I have been blessed to have many remarkable friends and mentors in my life. None were more important and precious to me than Paul Volcker. I met him when I helped create and served with him on the National Commission on Public Service, the Volcker Commission 30 years ago.
I worked and brainstormed with him to further his passionate commitment to good government and public service that resulted in the Volcker Alliance, and I proudly serve on its board. I sat with him a couple of months ago in his apartment, where, through pain & knowing his time..
..was near, he wanted to make sure his work would continue in the best way after he was gone. Paul Volcker saved America when he was chairman of the Fed. He had integrity, compassion, humor, a penetrating intelligence. He was the best of America. What a privilege to know him!
His beloved wife Anke took incredible care of him. May his memory be a blessing. People like Paul do not come along ery often. At this time, when our government is filled with people who are the antithesis of Paul Volcker, we can appreciate him even more.
