The other night, Nancy Pelosi claimed that, as a member of the House Intelligence Committee in 2003, she *knew* that there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction in the lead up to the Iraq War. (Perhaps she was bluffing; not sure if that’s better or worse.)

In 2006, with the Democratic Party ready and motivated to impeach Trump over the the WMD lie and other misdeeds, Pelosi was swayed by bromides like “now’s not the time” . . . “he was elected by the American people” . . . “this will divide the country” . . . Etc.
But when Trump allegedly held up aid to the Ukraine (a fake country anyway, which became a neocon/neoliberal project five years ago) in order to dig up dirt on his political rival, it’s now the time go balls to the wall!
Impeachment is fundamentally a *political* process and not a legal one, despite its trappings and rhetoric.

Wars, and lying about wars, that cost hundreds of thousands of lives, trillions of dollars, and caused untold externalities have no consequences for the people who planned and promoted them.
Of course, from the perspective of the power elite, impeachment is deadly serious. Wars, occupations, and the financial system can never be delegitimized. But screw your intern or incompletely shake down some vassal state, and you can be removed from office.
