Oireachtas Justice Committee releasing report on Direct Provision this morning.

It says Direct Provision "fails to respect the human dignity" of those placed in those centres.

Committee says it's highly concerned about moving families into emergency accommodation because of lack of room in Direct Provision.

Dept of Justice officials describe it as "worse than direct provision."
Committee says Direct Provision has a negative influence on "mental health and well-being of all person who are housed for long periods of time".

It's concerned over a lack of supports for vulnerable residents - including those who experienced abuse or were trafficked.

Committee Chair Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin notes that local communities where there are direct provision centres have very positive experiences.

Says the Irish people are very welcoming but notes concern about rise in anti-immigrant language in recent months.
Martin Conway of FG says the media has a responsibility to report the good news stories as well as the "Oughterards and the Achills".
Joe O'Brien of Greens says that direct provision "putting people not from an area in a building in an area - lays the ground for racism."

He proposes taking the responsibility for housing away from the Dept of Justice and Equality.
