It is of course a hypothesis. But I don’t see that it is sustainable for a government with virtually no representation in Scotland to resist an independence referendum if a majority of the Scottish Parliament is elected on a promise to hold one.
Such a refusal would simply turn up the pressure cooker in Scotland. And I suspect it wouldn’t have sufficient backing, when it came to it, it England.
We are not Spain, where the right has had an obsession with national unity at all costs and denial of difference. Scotland joined the Union voluntarily and as an equal nation. It is not, I think, sustainable in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 to deny 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 the choice to leave the Union if it wants to.
