The people saying that the election result proves social media is not reflective of the nation do not understand social media.

Short thread.

#GE19
They think it's a smart point to make - loads of people on Twitter liked Labour and Labour were thrashed which means social media was wrong and did not reflect some mythical "real" UK.
Firstly, Twitter is not all of social media. Secondly, your experience of social media is not all of social media. There are hundreds of millions of people on social media - of course all views are represented there. It's just that you don't see them.
Perhaps you don't follow people with those opinions. Secondly, the algorithm may not show them to you (because it thinks you don't agree) and thirdly, social media is not just stuff that people say but also sophisticated, targeted messaging by brands and, yes, political parties.
Social media is the Facebook Group you're not in. The targeted Facebook advertising you will never see. The WhatsApp message not sent to you. The Tweet that isn't in your timeline. The private Instagram account you don't follow. It is all of those and more.
So, when pundits who saw lots of Momentum tweets now want to sound smart by using ords like "echo chamber" you can feel free to disregard. They don't know what they are talking about.
