Now this is intriguing: "It's through about two million neurons, just two million, that they can convey emotion, awareness, sensation, sight, vision, hearing," mobile.abc.net.au/news/2018-07-2…
Here's @numenta @SubutaiAhmad ideas about the thalamus: numenta.com/blog/2018/08/2…
@Numenta @SubutaiAhmad Francis Crick noted that the TRN, the layer of inhibitory cells surrounding thalamic nuclei, is perfectly suited for attentional control.
@Numenta @SubutaiAhmad A recent review by Rikhye et al. ... mentions a few other possibilities, including the idea that the thalamus might perform contextual, task-specific computations. "Toward an Integrative Theory of Thalamic Function". Annu. Rev. Neurosci., 163–183.
@Numenta @SubutaiAhmad 2 million neurons is an extremely small number to do what is described in this video:
@Numenta @SubutaiAhmad The thalamus is clearly involved in a lot of "cognitive regulation" in fact it seems eerily like the source for consciousness. Of course we humans don't like this idea because many animals also have a thalamus!
@Numenta @SubutaiAhmad Which we share with animals way back with those 200 million years ago psychologytoday.com/us/blog/your-c…
@Numenta @SubutaiAhmad An octopus doesn't have a Thalamus, but is conjectured to have something similar: jonlieffmd.com/blog/the-uniqu…
@Numenta @SubutaiAhmad To conclude, the first firm that creates an "artificial thalamus" will have a tremendous advantage. Two million neurons are within the grasp of today's silicon technology.
