In the space of all useful algorithms, there are algorithms that human can repeat in their minds and there are algorithms that are the building blocks for their own thoughts. There is no law that guarantees that they are the same.
Said differently, algorithms that we show that can solve a problem or usually not the same algorithm a human may have used to solve the same problem. But because we have are educated, we mistake the algorithm we learned to use to be the same algorithm that we intrinsically have.
The class of algorithms that serve as the building blocks of human cognition is the class of algorithms that can be learned from interaction with the world and without explicit instruction. But learning itself is an algorithm, so the human algorithm must be a learning algorithm.

Diminishing returns and R&D. Any new research field has a problem where low hanging fruit is picked first and those, who are first, celebrate their genius. But progress is through recombination. The increasing new methods discovered in DL make it a toolbox without comparison.
Humans tend to give a bigger weight to progress that is entirely new over progress than is based on recombination. But most technologies that are useful are a product of recombination. Exponential growth is a consequence of recombination.
Humans also are unable to recognize exponential growth. Many technologies today are recombinant. The technologies that do fail are those that have difficulty being repurposed to new applications.

Here are some post-Australian election thoughts on what happened to the climate change vote. Here’s a decent article as a primer.

Firstly, me. I have been working in climate change in some form since ~2006. Have seen us try to act on this many times.

Let’s be clear: Labor lost this election badly. Greens vote barely moved. Australia re-elected a leader who brought a lump of coal into our parliament as a prop. Whatever we did to make a strong climate vote materialise *did not work*.

1st point - let’s take responsibility.
This voter saw Labor with a platform of 3 major reforms: a tax reform, an investment law reform, and a deep climate change promise.

That’s 2 reasons the vote against even if you want more action on climate.

So maybe - focus? Treat it seriously.

The clearing at Kingvale was the first ever to be called in by the federal regulator in 2016.

This means the proponent refused to refer the project for assessment, despite it having significant impacts on matters of national importance.
There was significant lobbying by senior coalition members for the dept. to approve the clearing.

The government then made a call to fast track the assessment (and approval) of the clearing, which appeared to be in response to political pressure - I'll come back to this...
