GORDO proviene del latín "gurdus", de una raíz indoeuropea, "*gʷr̥dus", que significa "lento", cognado con el griego βραδύς y el lituano gurdùs. De "lento" en el sentido físico pasó a significar "lento de entendederas", y de ahí a "simplón", "tonto", "cándido".
Decía el rétor Quintiliano:
"Et gurdos, quos pro stolidis accipit vulgus, ex Hispania duxisse originem audivi".
"Y la palabra "gordo", que el vulgo emplea en lugar de "estúpido", he escuchaod que deriva su origen de Hispania".
Gradualmente, se dio un cambio semántico, y, ya que en el imaginario popular al arquetipo de persona simplona y de pocas luces se le asociaba con la masa corporal, se dio un cambio semántico de "corto de entendederas" a "entrado en carnes".
