The ecosystem is moving: Challenges for distributed and decentralized technology from the perspective of Signal development by @moxie #36c3
Moxie kicks about talking about signal which is centralized service at the moment. That means no P2P Blockchain messaging. Want to explore decentralizing since the ecosystem is moving. #36c3
Moving rapidly is against decentralization however the internet is decentralized. Once you decentralize a protocol it becomes very difficult to change. #36c3
Decentralized means that it is often stuck in time. If you run your own email means that it is encrypted. By contrast, WhatsApp is centralized but it provides end to end encryption. They were able to roll that out with a software update. #36c3
Why do we need decentralization anyway?
1. Privacy
2. Censorship Resistance
3. Availability
4. Control

Privacy is often about control about data and where it resides along with the metadata around it and who has access to it. #36c3
People think that the internet is decentralized but in reality there are clusters of networks and clusters of where content is created. #36c3
New techniques around metadata are unlikely to evolve with decentralization but are likely to evolve with centralization. Moxie gives examples around how signal deals with messages. #36c3
Signal developed a anonymous membership scheme where by a user can authenticate to the server without revealing sensitive metadata. #36c3
Moxie continues to critique decentralization and argues that decentralization will not be good for privacy. Example of a call between 2 parties, in a decentralized world, you would need to reveal IP address and metadata. #36c3
Moxie critiques the censorship resistance aspect of decentralization and argues that if you did that, each time would need to get around censorship, you would blow up your social graph. To get around censorship resistance you need to move quickly #36c3
Moxie argues that the reality of availability for decentralization is that you would have more outages rather than fewer. #36c3
Moxie argues that people feel like they have a lack of control about their data. Proponents argue that it is easy to change mail but why are so many people using Yahoo mail? Because change is hard. Changing email is harder than federated services like IM services. #36c3
Federated services also provide for extensibility that allows developers to modify services to meet their needs. Example of a protocol of XMPP but resulted in a big mess with no conformity which negates the benefit and value of it. #36c3
When people disagree with each other, they often fork open source repositories which confuses users and leads to duplication of effort and very little control. #36c3
Moxie that we need to reconsider how we think about technology and decentralization. People working on decentralized systems need to understand that the ecosystem is moving and need to learn from mistakes of the past. #36c3
Moxie touches on mixing strong AES with QRC algorithms, something I am very interested in. #36c3
