What the World can learn from Hongkong by Katharin Tai #36c3
First up is the One Country Two Systems where there isn't really democracy, it is a kind of sudo democracy where freedoms are limited. #36c3
Hong Kong has been described as a city of Protest with several high profile protests including Article 23, Curriculum reform, Heritage and the Umbrella revolution in 2014. #36c3
The protests made people feel betrayed and felt that Beijing had massively overstepped the boundaries. People realized that violence may be the answer to show their displeasure #36c3
China doesn't want a one country and two party system. China wants a one country one system and will do everything it can to undermine Hongkong's democracy. #36c3
The extradition bill was introduced so that China could
June 9 - the first round of protests.
June 12 - Protestors prevent bill from being read a 2nd time
June 16 - Largest protest in Hong Kong history, over 2 million in attendance.
#36c3
On July 21, gangsters started beating innocent people up and made many people unhappy. On August 18, 1.7 Million protested the actions of the government. Additional protests were held throughout the month. #36c3
6 152 people have been arrested and 921 have been prosecuted from the 774 protests that have taken place. #36c3
The protests succeeded due to 5 clear demands:
• Complete Withdrawal of the extradition Bill
• Release of Arrested Protestors
• Protests shouldn't be classified as "Riots"
• Independent Investigation into police brutality
• Real Universal suffrage #36c3
Everything in the Hong Kong protests gets meme'd. The second strategy is to "be water" which based on Bruce Lee quote which means be "fluid, flexible, and fast-moving" #36c3
Protestors stayed ahead of the police through mapping technology and reports on websites and on various channels like Telegram. #36c3
People avoided arrest by using open source crowd source based intelligence. This is very important as we don't know what sentences they would have gotten. #36c3
The third strategy of the successful protestors is decentralized decision making which makes everyone feel involved and reduces the risk of leaders getting arrested. Grass root movements on platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram allow people to share their views #36c3
Interesting tales of the Hong Kong protestors and how decisions are made like when to leave the Hong Kong protest at the airport. After leaving the airport people used swarm intelligence to determine how they should get home. #36c3
Strategy 4 of the protests - How to maintain anonymity as a security measure. #36c3
Strategy 5 - Division of labour, people were helping each other with tasks like delivery of supplies even if they disagreed with each others actions. #36c3
Examples of the division of labour and the front liners who wear the most recognizable uniforms. They also have people that extinguish tear gas canisters and throw them back at the police. #36c3
Chilean protestors have used the same techniques as the Hong Protestors. Peaceful Protestors are important for visibility and to make sure that the movement is not reliant on the front liners. Working together is important to succeed. #36c3
Protestors have adapted to the things that police are throwing at them. A logistics group makes sure that supplies get to the front lines and also manage medical supplies like saline solutions to wash people's eyes out for pepper spray and tear gas. #36c3
Buses are code words for transport to and from protests. Stationery is a code word for a change of clothes. People use Telegram bot to check if cars belong to the police. #36c3
There are also teams of people that work online from around the world to create art pieces to reframe and explain protests in various languages. #36c3
Strategy 6 for the successful protests is counter narratives for what the false information that the police may provide. Memes are not enough and need people to define what is happen and highlight inaccuracies. #36c3
Strategy 7 for the protests was organizing and mobilizing. Staying organized is important to rally people and share resources / knowledge #36c3
You can follow journalists on Twitter for more information about the Hong Kong Protests. Protests are not only happening in Hong Kong but around the world and it is vital to stay informed. #36c3
