In a functioning media industry, I would probably just be a journalist. But right now, it’s not a viable profession for me, so I treat it like a side hustle.

Nonetheless, I felt like my hustle started to come into its own this year.

Here’s some of my best work:
For @Harpers, I reported from Wounded Knee, site of a historic massacre and liberation, amidst historic climate-induced flooding:
harpers.org/blog/2019/12/w…
For @NewYorker, I wrote about how film is breathing new life into Indigenous languages:
newyorker.com/culture/cultur…
For @nytimes, I wrote about the Alcatraz Occupation, which began in 1969, and why it still matters fifty years later:
nytimes.com/2019/11/20/opi…
For @walrusmagazine, I traveled to the Kahnawake Mohawk Nation, present-day Quebec, for a recitation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy’s more than 500 year old constitution.

It holds insights for the climate crisis:
thewalrus.ca/we-need-indige…
For @thenation, I reported on the first day Native women—@Deb4CongressNM and @sharicedavids—held office on Capitol Hill: thenation.com/article/haalan…
For @guardian, I interviewed and profiled Omaha elder Nathan Phillips at the height of the Covington Catholic controversy: theguardian.com/us-news/2019/f…
For @esquire, I reported from the Native American Presidential Forum, where @wirelesshogan, an independent and the only Native presidential candidate, made the case for a national reckoning on slavery and genocide: esquire.com/news-politics/…
I also went on @MSNBC to talk about the forum and the issues that matter to Indian Country (yes, that’s what it’s called): msnbc.com/all-in/watch/e…
I went to Paris, where I covered the opening of Maria Hupfield’s challenging and theoretically innovative exhibition, “The One Who Keeps on Giving” which defied the diplomatic context of the Canadian Embassy where it was displayed in sly ways: thewalrus.ca/how-canada-use…
For @canartca, I reviewed the late Kwakwaka’wakw master Beau Dick’s first NYC show “Devoured by Consumerism” which leveled a powerful, if ironic, Indigenous critique of capitalism: canadianart.ca/essays/beau-di…
For @highcountrynews, I traveled to Rapid City, SD, where the Two Bulls of the Oglala Nation opened a show with literally dozens of artists from their family.

Art is a family thing for many Native nations:
hcn.org/issues/51.3/tr…
For @Open_Space, I wrote about @joeyymontoya, @UrbanNativeEra and Indigenous Millennial fashion: openspace.sfmoma.org/2019/06/dresse…
And for @theprospect, I went back to Oakland to write about the movement for a Green New Deal in my hometown: prospect.org/greennewdeal/p…
