Evangelical theologian Wayne Grudem goes all-in with Trump talking points. Or “Trump Should Not Be Removed from Office: A Response to Mark Galli and Christianity Today” 1/ townhall.com/columnists/way…
I was tempted to stop reading after Grudem - a professor of ethics! - badly mischaracterizes July 25 call & the “investigations” Trump asked for. Grudem repeats debunked lie that prosecutor Biden “got fired” was investigating Hunter. Nope. 2/
usatoday.com/story/news/pol…
Grudem bases his “Galli didn’t say how Trump violated Constitution” claim on this lie, even quoting Constitution: “I know of nothing in our Constitution or laws that says there is anything wrong with seeking help from a foreign government in investigating possible corruption.” 3/
Then comes the ridiculously stupid from Grudem: “I see nothing wrong with the president doing things that will bring him personal, political benefit. In fact, I expect that every president” in past did this. What a shameful sentence from a man so many people read for guidance. 4/
This was the same claim Mick Mulvaney had to WALK BACK because it was so shockingly authoritarian and unethical. But here we have one of the premier (white) evangelical theologians saying it without shame. 😔5/
Then Grudem tries unethical sleight of hand. He insists Galli listed 6 reasons Trump should be removed and says all are unsupported. But a better read is that Galli only listed 1: the Ukraine matter. The other stuff shows Trump’s overall immoral character. Galli makes clear 6/
impeachment hearings turned his tide in ways Mueller did not: “We believe the impeachment hearings have made it absolutely clear, in a way the Mueller investigation did not, that President Trump has abused his authority for personal gain and betrayed his constitutional oath.” 7/
Grudem’s claims on other “reasons” are worthless then. But he offers stupid Trump talking point: “Claiming that we should remove him now for those things is simply an attempt to overturn the results of the election.” Grudem should know better. But his judgment is broken. 8/
My favorite (sarcasm) Trump defense by Grudem is on the tweets. Grudem reads a week of Trump tweets during Xmas and concludes Trump calling his opponents names is “impoliteness” and “trivial matter” not showing Galli’s “morally lost and confused.” 9/
Wayne Grudem is morally confused. So confused he tries to debunk @washingtonpost Trump lie calculator. Then he says: “Do I think that Trump has ever intentionally told a lie? I don’t know. Perhaps. I admit that he often exaggerates and boasts...” Grudem is morally confused. 10/
The rest of the post by Grudem is evidence of his deep moral confusion but also his now abundantly clear partisanship that blinds his judgement about Trump. It is sycophancy. It is shameless and disturbs my soul. As it should all who claim truth and freedom. End/

PS Something I wrote on Grudem's first endorsement of Trump. That was bad also:
