Absolutely--huge shoutout to #JanetBrowne, whose work informed "Through Darwin's Eyes" sections of Consider the Platypus.

A lot of folks ask if Darwin is still relevant to this conversation... Short answer: 100%. He's the reason for the season. (More on this later in the week.)
So enough about ME. Let's talk about #Darwin.
We're learning more about evolution every day, with every fossil we find, every genome we sequence. A lot of new knowledge prompts people to ask whether Darwin was "wrong." @KingOfUniverse8 asked me this yesterday:

Yes! But! not about everything AND that's okay!
This is like asking if #science got stuff wrong. YES. Being wrong is a part of science. It's built into the scientific method, & is why peer review is part of the scientific process. #evolution
@KingOfUniverse8 A reframe: Darwin gave us a starting point. He knew he didn't have all the information he needed to completely understand #evolution (hint: neither do we, 160yrs later). No one is more bothered by this than Darwin was. (Here's a passage I like from Gene by @DrSidMukherjee):

Dynamics of the process in one image (which I re-drew due to legal issues for the presentation😂). Key takeaway: this process has A TON of parameters/levers to pull on an already highly stochastic process.

On powder: the goal is to get a flat, homogeneous, and tightly packed layer of spherical particles before we even start with the laser. The dynamics of powder spreading become important to understand.

The dodder (Cuscuta campestris, or any of the other Cuscuta species) is a parasite, it needs to steal all its food and resource from other plants. The adaptations required to live like this make for a lot of really interesting behavioural contrasts!

Researchers have been studying networking (connecting with others for social or business relationships) for awhile now and most data has it that 70% to 85% of all jobs are acquired through networking/networks.
There is more data that states up to 80% of all jobs are not even listed publicly: they are filled internally or via networking.

1. Trump is in Iowa. @JoeBiden likely planned his trip to be there at the same time knowing that would bait Trump into giving Joe the news cycle. Trump's first stop was at an ethanol plant. I make his crowd as less than 300. Trump in Iowa at Ethenol plant crown view as he leaves. IMO less than 300. He likely had more in his security detail.
2. Trump about to arrive at Iowa GOP dinner. He stayed clear of the @IowaSoybeans folks he's destroying with tariffs but in a few minutes we will see how the Iowa state @GOP, whose major constituency has been economically harmed by Trump tariff policy, welcomes the #OrangeMenace.
3. Love to have somebody doing still photography there. I miss the @AP.

As the #WhyTheyCantWrite slow chat winds down I wanted to highlight some of the books that proved so useful to me as I worked on the book. These are in no particular order, but they're all recommended.
I'm going to use Amazon links because they're easiest to access, but I urge people to use their local booksellers, libraries, etc to access these books if possible.
"Air and Light and Time and Space" by Helen Sword. This is good to help reflect on one's writing process, but it's also interesting to see the conditions under which academics work and contrast them with the circumstances under which students often work. amazon.com/Air-Light-Time…
