There's lots of evidence of discrimination against international medical graduates -- that they are supposedly not as good as US medical grads.

But is it true? Are IMGs not as good as US MGs?

In 2017, we (@ytsugawa1 @AnupamBJena others) examined this for hospitalists. What did we find?

That IMGs actually had BETTER outcomes than those of US medical grads. See @bmj_latest paper

Now we publish our findings for surgeons. We know that many IMG surgeons face discrimination. But what's the data?

Indeed, IMG surgeons are just as good as USMGs. Period.

Adj mortality rates IMGs to USMGs (7.3% vs 7.3%).

Why does this all matter?

1. We should realize that nearly 1 in 4 doctors in US graduated from international medical schools

2. on average, international medical graduates are every bit as good as US medical graduates (sometimes better).

3. there is a global competition for talent and US attracts some of the best in the world

4. Biggest beneficiaries are Americans who receive care from these physicians

5. To the extent that we remain an open and welcoming nation, our patients will benefit the most
