As we head into what looks like a busy 2020, American Oversight will continue to receive and analyze public records from the FOIA requests and lawsuits we filed in 2019.

See some of the stories we uncovered over the last year: americanoversight.org/american-overs…
Late on a Friday night in November, the State Department released nearly 100 pages of documents to us in response to our lawsuit for Ukraine-related records — which showed a paper trail from Rudy Giuliani to the Oval Office to Sec. of State Pompeo: americanoversight.org/state-departme…
These records are also further evidence of the administration’s unprecedented obstruction of Congress. In its impeachment inquiry, the House requested that the administration turn over related documents, but the Trump White House directed agencies not to comply with the requests.
Since we were able to obtain these records through FOIA litigation, it’s clear that the administration had no legal basis for withholding them from the legislative branch.
We uncovered way more than just Ukraine-related documents in 2019. See what else we found: americanoversight.org/american-overs…
After North Korea tested a missile in 2017, former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley sent classified information over an unclassified email system. We uncovered the documents: americanoversight.org/document/state…
Nikki Haley joined a slew of Trump officials who misused government email. Given the scrutiny of government officials’ email use leading up to the 2016 election, you would think Trump administration officials would be more careful. See our investigation: americanoversight.org/investigation/…
The Trump administration's "Remain in Mexico" policy has put many migrants seeking asylum in danger. Emails we obtained show that some within DHS wanted to ask asylum-seekers whether they had fear of being returned to Mexico — but the question was cut: buzzfeednews.com/article/hameda…
Former Kansas Sec. of State Kris Kobach tried to use a city ordinance he helped write for Fremont, Nebraska, to turn hundreds of names over to ICE while he was running for Kansas governor in 2017. See the emails we uncovered: americanoversight.org/document/dhs-c…
Transportation Sec. Elaine Chao is being investigated for potentially using her office to aid her family’s shipping company. Her calendars reveal that she held a private photo session with her father and the company's employees at DOT: americanoversight.org/elaine-chao-ca…
We obtained records showing that Chao's office coordinated with the office of her husband, Sen. Mitch McConnell, favored Kentucky-specific interests at the request of McConnell’s office, and created a separate communication channel for Kentucky requests: politico.com/story/2019/02/…
Commerce Secretary Ross entered the administration with a host of complicated financial holdings, which has made it difficult to determine how well he has complied with his ethics agreements. But we've managed to learn a fair amount. See our investigation: americanoversight.org/investigation/…
For instance, his calendars revealed multiple meetings that raise concerns about conflicts of interest, including a meeting with now-former Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenberg in March 2017 while Ross's wife owned $3 million worth of stock in the company: forbes.com/sites/danalexa…
White House adviser Stephen Miller has been working behind the scenes to help implement the Trump administration’s hardline immigration policies — from family-separation to the so-called Migrant Protection Protocols: americanoversight.org/investigation/…
Miller has installed hand-picked, like-minded advisers across the administration to help him carry out his extremist views. Emails we obtained show his close relationship with senior ICE official Jon Feere and their coordination on anti-immigrant policies: rollingstone.com/politics/polit…
This time last year, we were in the middle of the longest government shutdown in history. But the Old Post Office Tower attached to the Trump International Hotel, which sits on government property remained open: eenews.net/stories/106026…
Poll workers in Georgia were instructed that the default password for iPads used to check in voters and update statuses was “1234.” After this issue was reported on, state elections officials said that the password had been changed. See the documents: americanoversight.org/document/carro…
We may not know what 2020 will bring, but we do know that American Oversight will continue to uncover the facts and hold our government — at both the federal and state levels — accountable: americanoversight.org/american-overs…
