Of course it isn’t just the drought & fires.

It is the mass displacement of dispossessed people with all the associated problems

What Whitehall needs most of all are politicians who combine a determination to deliver on their promises with honesty, competence and a willingness to listen.

I would also say continuity given the high level of ministerial churn in too many departments.
High turnover, whether in key rôles in the Civil Service or amongst ministers undermines accountability and responsibility. Too easy to blame the guy who has just left.

Also with high churn p, the opportunities to grow deep and rich knowledge is limited.
Most of us will be conscious now of the woeful absence of basic statistical understanding from within our political ranks, including those who are ministers.

Cummings should be directing his attention at educating them.

Thanks to @chrismiller_uk for introducing me to this thread by @tomiahonen introducing me to the world of drone warefare about which I knew little.

E.g. 90% of all air strikes in past decade by USA around the world - done by DRONES. By the RQ 1 Predator killer drone air strikes

Spy drones were hitherto thought to be untouchable.

In 2014, my 9th grade son said he didn't like high school bc teachers hated him: "they blame white guys for literally everything. apparently I'm a misogynist, whatever that is."

we live in a dark red county (Trump 73%.) I thought we were immune to ID politics & PC culture.
my stepdaughter is a senior; she attends the other HS in our county. they had a civil rights event last year, students received extra credit for attending. the featured speaker was a transwoman and xer girlfriend. my SD had LOTS of questions when she got home. (h/t Google.)
both of our high schools are jammed with DREAMers and anchor babies – we're a bedroom community for illegals working construction, landscaping, housekeeping, etc, and for immigrants working at UGA and in booming Gwinnett. grade schools replaced arts with ESL.

My generation, those born from the 70s to the 80s, were children during the Moi era.

We never knew dialogue. We knew silence and fear. The idea that the public had a say in this country was dismissed with "Wanjiku doesn't need a constitution."
Moi corrupted everything with money and surveillance. I know friendships that broke, families betrayed, because Moi compromised a brother to betray a brother. Moi supported dictators like Abacha and rescued Rwandan genocidaires in 1994. That the evil that runs in Kenya's blood.
But Moi's presidency followed the Uthamakistan era which was worse. Jomo killed many heroes, including the Mau Mau leaders. He tainted the souls of his people with oaths. He exported land greed from the white highlands to Coast and the Rift Valley.

What's a scientist? I wrote about my imposter syndrome as a scientist working outside academia (link ⬇️).

This feeling is largely due to how academics made me feel when I transitioned from academia to a science editing/writing career.

And it seems I'm not alone (Thread)
We're the "science dropouts". In academia we systematically hear that people "quit science" for an "alternative" career because they didn't "survive" academia.

This type of language implies scientists working outside academia aren't "real" scientists. They're failed scientists.
Last year a PNAS paper analysing career progression in science split the scientific community into "full-career scientists" (academics) and "dropouts" (everyone else).

PhDs leaving academia with a single publication were called "transients".

How insensitive is this language?

#Academia is brutal if you have anxiety &/or depression. I doubt I'm the only one falling apart at the end of a long year

Solidarity to everyone struggling with the remorseless criticism, crippling workload & systemic bullying. Hope you have a long & healing rest over Christmas
Academia harms mental health, & mental health harms academic performance. The two have become so difficult to separate that #HigherEd management can dismiss #MentalHealth problems as individual-level problems, due to 'overly sensitive' staff who can't cope.
But even if true - and academics are some unique brand of 'snowflakes' - what is done to help? Lunch time meditation? Resilience training? Visits from a 'therapy animal'? These are outrageously sticking-plaster solutions to a gaping wound.
