Wow. Full gaslight from Facebook exec who in June 2014, after I expressed concerns about Facebook’s data practices, assured me they practiced “privacy by design” from start to finish across the org. So put little stock in their claim here. @alfredwkng cnet.com/news/at-ces-fa…
That same month June 2014 was the month when Aleksandr Kogan and his partner (Joseph Chancellor, who went on to work at Facebook) signed their deal to sell Facebook data to SCL/Cambridge Analytica.
And then during next 18 months Guardian investigated and ultimately reported on it. We now know from records Facebook employees had waved red flags but it resulted in a cover-up and PR tactics rather than a focus on privacy. It’s wild for same people to be comparing FB to Apple.

lol, Google going to Google. Looks like they regurgitated their August 2019 cookie blocking news under embargo with lots of reporters. Here is what is really up. Microsoft Edge rolls out tomorrow with default tracking prevention built off @disconnectme (so was @firefox).
Although both Edge and Firefox trailed Safari and industry innovator Brave in their move to tracking prevention, Microsoft has a $1.2T value and renewed success/energy at building consumer-focused software. With Microsoft's marketing capabilities, I wouldn't sleep on them.

Wow. Smart and interesting as there have always been significant questions on this. Google, Yahoo, Aol were all reported (Google admitted so publicly) to be paying off the top Adblock company effectively making their market. I’ll find an old thread of mine for background.
Here is an old tweet from @profcarroll who also followed closely. Critical to understand the significance of whitelisting Google’s inventory plus the ability to influence roadmap, rules and design based on payments.
Or this from @dmarti at Mozilla who flags the issue with how consumers may be deceived by the software.

Where I agree with the overall sentiment in this, entirely disappointed at the lack of attention to microtargeting of political ads which is the toxic ingredient towards pol ads that makes it more difficult to police, fact check and provide sunlight as a disinfectant.
You don’t need to take my word for it but certainly @EllenLWeintraub, academics, former employees have all been saying similar things. Don’t ban political ads on social media but restrict or pause microtargeting. @markscott82 washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/…
And asking @markscott82, as I’ve asked @TonyRomm, to please stop softening language around Facebook’s scandal. The SEC report and the signed commercial agreement between GSR and Cambridge Analytica/SCL explicitly show Facebook data was *sold* to Cambridge Analytica/SCL.

So let’s start w/ the good news. One year in, 150k privacy complaints have been made under Europe’s #privacy rules, a marked increase vs previous years. But (and it’s a big but) very few companies have been fined, most notably @google in France w/ its €50m penalty
That doesn’t mean fines = success. It’s fair to say that companies now take data protection more seriously, and that national EU regulators *are* building cases against potential abuse.

2. There's a new narrative about Facebook's embrace of #GDPR (@alexstamos gives one recent version of it) - that GDPR is good for companies like Facebook, because it is complex and easier for big companies to comply with than small upstart competitors. Not altogether wrong,
3. but not really right either. Facebook's ginger embrace of European style legislation is making lemonade out of lemons. Zuckerberg would surely have preferred a world with no privacy legislation, where companies were left to self regulate, and market mechanisms predominated.

2. Framing and narratives matter. Seeing #data only as an asset (oil, gold, currency, etc) ignores implicit risks. Also seeing it as radioactive (with a half-life), an externality, a ticking time bomb, a liability, etc helps to locate it in a larger ecosystem. 2/n #GoingDigital
3. To a tech hammer, every socioeconomic problem looks like a tech nail. Informational asymmetries and power imbalances require attention to complex structural issues, not just on deployment of one size fits all tech solutions in a box. 3/n #GoingDigital

UCC had opportunity to comment on the #Data.Protection & Privacy Bill. The enactment of this law is long overdue. A comprehensive law on the collection & processing personal information gives effect to the right to Privacy envisaged under Article 27(2) of the Constitution
UCC welcome the protections offered by the Bill in terms of export of data, breach notification requirements, data subjects access rights, automated decision making, compensation and the right to be forgotten and provision for financial and penal sanctions for breach of the law.
Distinction between Data collectors & data controllers.
The Bill should however clarify & distinguish Data Collectors, from Data Processors & Data Controllers. Clause 2 is inconsistent with international good practice which provides for two broad categories of Data Controllers
