Your regular reminder that white supremacists have *always* claimed to oppose racism, & depicted pro-integration advocates as "the real racists." This is Georgia's arch-segregationist, Lester Maddox, debating the infinitely patient Jim Brown in 1970.
Here Jim Brown says the focus of civil rights activists should be economic development for black Americans and Maddox quickly jumps in to say "and white people!" Brown's point is that there's a long history of exploitation to redress. Maddox disagrees.
Oh man, this exchange is something else. As things get more heated Brown reminds Maddox of Brown's "reputation"...and notes that Maddox has a state trooper with him right behind the curtain.
This is from later in the exchange. OMG, this is so similar to the "deplorable" dynamic between Trump supporters and the media. Maddox gets righteously upset that Cavett calls his supporters bigots. Typical unfair media, he says.
Man, Maddox totally loses his cool here over the idea that some white people in Georgia might be bigots. The only bigots, he says, are "the white ones from New York and New Jersey who came down and tried to destroy the south."
The key point here is that Maddox is both a liar and a bully. And he's also a total whiner...when he doesn't get his way he just walks off. He claimed to not know Jim Brown was the guest...which Cavett points out is not true.
I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge where Jim Brown's politics have gone since 2016 (when he supported Hillary Clinton).
Here's a short summation of Maddox's political career in Georgia. This was back when the Democratic Party of the South was the party of segregation...Maddox's Dem successor as Governor (Jimmy Carter) marked a departure from that segregationist history.
