This is where I usually get the boat every Monday morning and Friday evening to go to school. There was no boat today.

#StormBrendan is not unique for the west of Ireland. But it is a reminder if what we face should we not act on the climate crisis.

(1/...)
Warmer ocean temperatures leads to more intense winter storms (2-11% is a conservative estimate for wind speed increase). Rising sea level increases risk of flooding and means that where I was standing might well be in underwater in 20 years time. 48k without power in the West.
It's already not uncommon for boats to be disrupted for 4, 5, 6 days in a row where I live. Imagine how much worse it's going to get.

Storms destroy infrastructure, flood homes, roads and fields and kill people.
But that's only one aspect of climate breakdown. @FineGael and @LeoVaradkar would like to convince you that importing LNG will give us energy security, but look at the ocean here.

Do you want to be relying on supertankers carrying highly volatile gas to give us energy?
Do you know what would give us real energy security? Investment in renewables.

Ships won't go in weather like this, but there is no shortage of wind. Ireland is one of the best countries to build offshore wind in (per @howarth_cornell and others).
Food security is another issue. We import 80% of our food in Ireland.

Remember supermarket shelves being emptied ahead of storms like Ophelia?

Imagine what happens when there is no food to import due to climate related disasters, drought, even small supply chain disturbances
#AustraliaBurns. Jakarta is underwater.

But don't delude yourself into thinking your safe if you live in a rich developed nation. We're all in this boat together, and if we don't act now we will face consequences.

All of us.
I don't endorse politicians, but @saoirse_mchugh has been talking about a lot of the things I mention in this thread and I think she is a decent, honest person.

Check her out if you don't know about her yet!
I don't know how I'd vote even if I could, so I can't offer much advice.

However, I strongly urge everyone to take a good look at the records and policies of the candidates who come knocking on doors. Make sure they know that #GE2020 is a #ClimateElection.
