The appeal for people to come back together must be based on something. We've heard this for so long now: From May, from Johnson. But it never involves actually reflecting the 48% in policy terms.
No customs union. No single market. Now, no alignment at all, seemingly of any kind. What exactly is it that you wish for Remainers to respond to?
Everyone would like to come together. I can't think of anyone I've met who enjoys the notion of a divided country. But that must be based on an offer.
It's clear what the Brexiters are getting: Everything. And it's clear what the Remainers are getting: Nothing. That's not the basis of 'coming together'. That's a demand for surrender.
So the answer will be no. Liberals, internationalists and those who believe in Europe won't come together over the negation of their values. And you can bong all you fucking like mate, but that shit ain't changing.
Even now, it's not too late. Brexiters could offer a credible plan for a sensible and close relationship to the EU. But that would be treated as treason. And that right there shows you how skin-deep the call for us all to 'come together' really is.
And just to be clear: You will not get the surrender. Brexiters have created their opponents and incentived them to fight for the long-haul.
If a compromise had been offered from the start, as it should have been with a 48-52 vote, Remain would have ceased to exist. But it was not. it was turned into a religious mission.
And so it remains. How else can you explain the system-wide resistance to alignment or the insane gibberish of the one-year self-impose timetable?
And on that basis, opponents of Brexit - currently in a state of advanced despair - will define themselves by opposing what happens next.
The anger at this project will last for as long as it takes to reverse it.
