It'll be quite heartbreaking if the alliance between Scottish nationalists and non-SNP Remainers, which has done good work for last few years, fractures. Doesn't have to be that way. We can show how to disagree with civility and mutual respect.
Remainers need to recognise how badly Scotland has been treated these last few years and acknowledge the emotional and rational case for independence. I think it's flawed, but it is consistent and convincing.
Nationalists need to stop treating every expression of scepticism or disagreement like some terrible London plot. And stop claiming they speak on behalf of the entirety of the Scottish people.
Honestly, that is doable. We're all capable of it. Both sides have attacked the tribalism and and lowest-common-denominator approach of Brexiters for years. No need at all to fall into it ourselves.
I say this more in hope than expectation, but there it is anyway - my little bit of hope.
And for those bringing up the Nandy Catalonia comments yesterday - yes that was regrettable, but in a high pressure TV interview you do sometimes fall over the point you're trying to make. It happens. Here it is the argument she was making better expressed medium.com/@lisa_nandy/so…
