A few things I want you to remember today:

1) Seventy-five percent of Americans held NEGATIVE views of #MLK at the time of his murder.
2) His approval started to fall dramatically when he began to challenge segregation in the North, and to speak out against the Vietnam War
3) He was murdered while supporting a picket line for striking sanitation workers. He was one of the strongest and loudest proponents of unions in our history
If you think about him today or any other day, I hope you'll take time to wonder what radicals today you support in theory. Will you still support them if they challenge you or disrupt your life?
Yesterday I was at the Women's March Drag Brunch and local trans* activists occupied the stage to protest being ignored for a fourth year. It was deeply uncomfortable, and it should have been. A few minutes in, a white woman yelled "we paid to have brunch and we want to eat!"
I think of the people who say they Climate Extinction protestors or Black Lives Matter are hurting their own cause when they disrupt traffic.

It's easy to be for change when it doesn't cost you anything, when it doesn't force you to face your own complicity.
Don't be afraid to face discomfort with humility and grace. There's a 3 in 4 chance you thought King was too radical in 1968. If you're white, it's probably closer to 9 in 10. Think about that the next time someone makes you uncomfortable. #MLKDay
