Quick thread: Going back to fundamentals of creative writing, I recognize why so many people, especially chuds, say things like “if you have to read between the lines, then it doesn’t exist”.

I spent all of 2019 observing and trying to formulate a good argument as to why so many consumers insist that they are “apolitical” and insist that the things that they consume are “apolitical”.

I think another huge aspect of the equation is that critical thinking is a skill set like any other type of skill. I don’t mean just being able to figure out the moral of a story (that’s elementary), I mean being able to figure out what an author ISN’T saying [2]
Along the line of figuring out subtexts/implications of what an author of a work isn’t saying, there’s understanding what “death of the author” means. It isn’t a debatable “issue”. It is a whole aspect of literature to engage with one another about what we just experienced [3]
To claim that one is “apolitical” and insist that every piece of media is too, it is a failure to comprehend that media. If you can’t move past your own reluctance to pay attention to what’s going on past the surface, then you won’t understand what ppl’s issues are [4]
Bc it’s a skill set, that’s why we have media critics as a whole field of journalism. It’s tragic that trust in the media (no matter how corporate or indie one may be) is so low. That’s not to say that many critics are strictly good at what they do (Joker discourse is awful) [5]
Anyways, if you find chuds saying some dumb as shit things about what something is or isn’t and insist that YOUR politics is ruin THEIR media, then feel free to dismiss them and spend time discussing your issues with ppl who do care
