Gebrehiwot Baykedagn was born in 1886 in Adwa, Tigray. His father was in the service of Emperor Yohannes & died with him at the Battle of Matamma.

Due to a devastating famine & political turmoil in Tigray, Gebrehiwot left to the colony of Eritrea at the age of 7.
Gebrehiwot joined the Swedish Mission school in Massawa & a trip to the port would change his life forever.

He was given permission by the captain of a German ship to go aboard & look around. When the ship departed, he stowed away & ended up going to Europe in secret.
The German captain entrusted Gebrehiwot to a rich Austrian family who raised him, taught him German allowing him to study Medicine at Berlin University. After his studies, he returned to Ethiopia & was taught Amharic by Dajjach Yegezzu Behabte, mastering the language completely.
Dajjach Yegezzu & Haile-Giorgis recommended Gebrehiwot to Emperor Menelik, allowing him to become the private secretary to the Negus & accompanied the official mission to Germany led by Dajjach Masahasa in the summer of 1907.
His mastery of the Amharic language allowed Gebrehiwot to become one of the finest writers of Amharic prose.

The heir to the throne & future Emperor Teferi Makonnen appointed him as the inspector of the Addis Ababa-Djibouti train line in 1916 & Naggadras of Dire Dewa in 1917.
Gebrehiwot published 2 major works. "Mengistna ye Hizb Astadadar" translated into English & "Atse Menelik na Ethiopia" translated into French.

His deep concern for structural economics & income inequality makes Gebrehiwot one of the world's pioneers in Development Economics.
