@GretaThunberg When I testified at a congressional hearing this June, as the only woman and the second-oldest person on the panel, I started to keep a bingo card of how many times R members addressed me as "young lady" and "miss". It was a LOT. And they'd address @GretaThunberg the same way.
@GretaThunberg They like to make excuses ... IF you were older, IF more experienced, IF more credentialed, IF less naive, IF more sincere, then of course I'd respect you, they say. But the reality is this: they'll only respect us if we give up on the truth. And we will never do that.

As the planet warms, precipitation is projected to increase *especially in winter + spring* across northern Canada incl NL. And even tho it's warmer on average, it's still below freezing so much of that precipitation will fall as--surprise!--snow. Source: science2017.globalchange.gov/chapter/7/
Newfoundland has experienced a historic snowfall this week. As with any extreme event, it's not a question of "did climate change CAUSE this?" it's a question of, "by how much did climate change make it WORSE?" e.g. by increasing moisture in the atmosphere cbc.ca/news/canada/ne…
Nine times out of ten, we don't care about climate change because it's creating a new problem we've never experienced before; we care about it because it's loading the weather dice against us, increasing many of the risks we already face today.

People worry about how much land we'd need to supply the US with clean energy. Well, @elonmusk and I have independently calculated it and we both come up with something roughly comparable to the area we currently use for maple syrup or golf. A square about 100-120 miles per side.
@elonmusk As a 🇨🇦 let me hasten to clarify that I'm not advocating for removing maple syrup production but rather for co-production of energy on land that is also used for farming or pollinator ecosystems 😁 For example, @FreshEnergy runs this amazing clearinghouse: fresh-energy.org/beeslovesolar/
@elonmusk @FreshEnergy And here in West Texas, wind energy is typically located on private land that is simultaneously used for cotton farming or ranching.

@aoc's expansionary, unconstrained domestic spending proposal #GND (Green New Deal) is based on #MMT (Modern Monetary Theory).

It argues only regulating inflation & unemployment matters, not
deficits.

I'll let @paulkrugman handle MMT's explicit problems. Mine are with its implicit presumptions:
1—We know how to manage long term vs short term
2—Global interdependencies don't matter
3—permission for uncapped spending
4—ignoring effect of aging
5—We can control inflation post-MMT
1) LT vs ST
Even w/traditional keynesianism, we are terrible at ½ the theory. SAVE during booms, spend during downturns. We've got the 2nd half down. Not the first one. Is there anything in our history that might suggest we are capable or willing to make good LT rate decisions?
