1/ WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I TEXTED MY NORMIE FRIENDS ABOUT ROGAN AND SANDERS: AN UNDENIABLY ANECDATAL BUT SOMEWHAT ILLUMINATING AND HOPEFULLY ENCOURAGING THREAD

By the end of yesterday I was burned out by all the time myself and so many others had spent on this insane nontroversy.
2/ So I did what any normal person does on a Friday night and started texting my friends:

-my HS friend who works in energy policy hadn't heard of it

-my HS friend who works in nonprofit housing planning had heard of it but only because he is a goddamn nerd
3/

-my sociologist HS friend hadn't heard of it

-my lit prof friend college friend who spent her PhD years working for a grassroots org for undocumented immigrants hadn't heard of it

-my grad-school friend who was a higher-up on an unsuccessful Dem campaign hadn't heard of it
4/

-aaaaaaaand my grad-school friend who has a social-justicey background and presently works at a biomedical startup hadn't heard of it

We Too Online types are so profoundly, stiflingly solipsistic at the moment. It worries me. Everyone I texted is at least pretty politically
5/ engaged. These people are THEMSELVES bubble dwellers. But the bubble Too Online people have created is so much smaller and more esoteric. The problem is many of us have the power to drive the conversation. That's why this nonsense is now a national news story. Not good! But
6/ on the bright side most normal people have no goddamn clue what you're talking about when you bring this up, and I suspect as you move down the education/information ladder, it becomes less and less important. The idea that any voter who isn't a Rogan fan receptive to the
7/ endorsement will be affected by this is projection and wish-fulfillment by tiny-bubble types who wish the rest of the country -- yes, white and nonwhite alike -- had the same values they do. Luckily we are neurotic, Twitter-obsessed outliers.
8/ Update: I'm shocked. SHOCKED!
