I don’t know how to elegantly explain that my distaste for the cavalier way “top surgery” is being promoted and praised isn’t about breasts being some special feature every woman should proudly wear or hold in trust for feeding future children. 1/
I’m not always a fan of the breasts I wear around. Most of my large-chested friends have expressed how much easier it would be to have smaller ones. I don’t see breasts as some divine feature bestowed upon us. They’re not particularly sacred to me. 2/
Except they are, simply because they’re a part of me. They’re not better or worse than my shoulder or my hip or my little toe. They’re a part of me, so they’re valuable. Every cell in my body IS ME, and it has value, even if it’s not my favorite part to look at or touch. 3/
And I do struggle to love some parts of my body more than others (making friends with my belly is a daily practice, let me tell you), but that’s MY struggle with MY body, and no one has the right to say, “Ugh, yeah, you’re right. Those could definitely GO.” 4/
I get angry when doctors boast about how much breast tissue they’ve taken off teen girls this week, because those girls are valuable - every part of them. Every cell. And it takes a lifetime to make friends with all of you, and those girls will never have the time now. 5/
Instead of holistic acceptance, these girls will instead be tasked with making a different, harder kind of peace. Because where do you stop cutting? What flesh is good enough? What part of you is enemy, and what part, friend? It’s a messier war to fight now. 6/
I don’t feel grief for lost breasts and uteruses because they’re womanly or reproductive - I grieve because they’re US. Every part of us IS US, and the doctors that interfere in our private wars, choose a side and sell us weapons — FUCK them. Just fuck them to hell. 7/
It doesn’t matter if they’re sexy or not, if they’ll feed babies or not, if they’re what we’d choose or not. They’re parts that we’re made of, so they’re worth something, b/c all of us is worth something. I’m angry because girls are being robbed of the chance to realize that. 8/8
