Engaging and inspiring grand rounds from @EMARIANOMD today @HSSAnesthesia about biggest threats to #anesthesiology —concerns and solutions- classic Ed. Too much good info to share so excuse the string 1/8
Loss of identity.
-anesthesia is safe. We have enabled remarkable surgeries to happen and make it look easy
-we are sometimes invisible. We have a “ambivalence toward recognition”
-loss of identity ➡️ #burnout 2/8
SOLUTION to loss of identity
- We need to consider our brand
- #anesthesiology can lead in #PrecisionMedicine
- Take a “victory lap” and talk to families after #anesthesia
- Know when to take the mask off. Lead committees, contribute to the hospital, community impact 3/8
Fear of technology. We cannot resist technology—we must lead and embrace it. There is a way to embrace technology for better care 4/8
SOLUTION to Fear of technology:
- be the drivers of innovation and progress
- lead in the use of mobile health technology—prehabilitation and postop monitoring
- fear not, pilots are still needed
5/8
Fear of change:
- dangerous phrase “we’ve always done it this way”
-barriers are there—us/them thinking is not positive
-#anesthesiology has weathered storms and come out stronger
6/8
SOLUTION to fear of change:
- embrace that change is constant
- view change as an opportunity
- find gaps and fill them
- whether or not you do research, we MUST maintain our academic presence to be viable as a specialty. Support the programs where you trained.
7/8
Last- remember that these challenges and changes are not unique to anesthesiologists. All specialties seeing changes. Cardiologists mainly work for hospitals now. How and where we do #surgery is being challenged too. Our specialty is important and viable

...and Ed is awesome.
