I wish I could say I was surprised by this---but it's a perfect illustration of why Sanders' endorsement kerfluffle was a sign of ugly things to come.
So why do those of us on the left rankle whenever mainstream politicians or public figures cosy up to right wing extremists (cf Ellen and Bush; Biden & his whole Rolodex)? Because we fear that normalising them and their worldview will shift the Overton window in their direction.
We're already seeing that happen here. Now Coffin is implicitly accepting and promoting GG's smokescreen arguments on faith, implicitly blaming their targets for what they suffered, and suggesting anyone who disagrees is preventing healing and unity.
Suddenly irrational prejudice becomes an understandable class-based (?) reaction to the excesses of liberal feminism. Whose worldview is that, exactly? It's pretty standard GG sealioning but with a (thin) coat of red paint.
It's baffling that *this* of all things would be seen as a proletarian uprising, the reactionary "consumer" movement of people who almost literally worshipped capitalism and judged their victims for not buying as much stuff as they did.
More than that, however, Coffin's suggestion that these people were economically precarious is, at best, complicated. Not least because of the fact that their *targets* were often just as, if not more precarious (freelance writers, indies, etc.).
In order to make this as neat as Coffin is attempting to, one has to, on some level, buy into the GG propaganda that their targets were all rich trust-fund liberal feminists. Which, yeah, no. I myself was targeted by ample slander of that nature.
But before we get too deep in the weeds of re-litigating specifics, this whole farrago is exactly the problem with the endorsement and what it enables. As stans scramble to justify it, struggle to resolve the cognitive dissonance, these sorts of takes will proliferate.
And the end result will normalise some awful, truly harmful ideas. But hey, own "the libs" at any cost right? You can bond with a few alt-righters on that idea too, hey!
Postscript: I *did* read Coffin's entire thread. My points stand. The argument Coffin makes relies on accepting some of GG's notoriously deceptive claims about itself.
