Future relationship as a whole or just the future trade deal? How does this team relate to other negotiations such as with the US? And is Frost to be considered equivalent to Barnier or with whoever leads the trade element of the EU team? Questions...
Answer to one question here - Frost to be the direct counterpart of Barnier. Personally would rather have a more 'political' counterpart, and will be interesting to see who answers questions in Parliament on EU negotiations. The PM only? theguardian.com/politics/2020/…
I don't know how much time Barnier spends in negotiations compared to being out and about making speeches and meeting politicians, but its a lot, and not having a UK counterpart who does this is a problem for us.

Munich airport apparently. I don't think the sign is right under the Withdrawal Agreement, but an early reminder that as well as all the future negotiations government will have to deal with immediate issues - of which I'm expecting many.
- Future relationship with FTAs
- New FTAs with US, NZ, Aus etc
- WTO schedules
- Northern Ireland protocol implementation
- Rollover trade deals (Japan)
- Domestic policy changes (agriculture, immigration etc)
- Immediate market access issues
- Build customs facilities

Saturday. UK out of the EU. The lack of real change in transition period includes UK government still believing they can threaten the EU. Who like me will just point out a hard border will also apply to trade between Northern Ireland and GB.
Time for the UK government to end the silly games with the EU and recognise that their words and decisions matter more now - ultimately to people's jobs. Every supposed threat to the EU is also a threat to the operation of business in the UK.
Also, the wisdom of signing a treaty with limited scrutiny will be increasingly tested. The Withdrawal Agreement was not a good one for the UK, but made by a boxed in PM who then claimed it to be a triumph. Its effects could be significant.

So Brexit. Wanted to write something, but not to join the ranks saying why the UK never fitted in, and we'll do what's next many more times.

Also wanted on this day to acknowledge the world of #BrexitTwitter, the many friends made, and the good debates, which haven't been drowned out at least for me by the bad. If I start to name everyone I'll miss too many out, and that wouldn't be the intention.
And of course to wish @BorderIrish all the best in retirement. For many of us, this certainly isn't the end of #BrexitTwitter...

Irish foreign min Simon Coveney has warned that the EU will not agree to a free trade agreement with the UK unless it signs up to “equivalence” in the way goods are produced in the UK and the EU.

Surely the diplomat is being unfair, you say. Listen to Michel Barnier and incoming trade commissioner Phil Hogan. They say a deal can be done quickly. The U.K. currently shares EU rules and regulations. How difficult can it be to strip them away to a basic FTA, you say..BUT /2
If Johnson wins a majority in this election and takes U.K. out of EU in Jan, then Brussels is preparing to offer him a quick FTA but with the utmost levels of EU regulation bells and whistles attached (so-called level playing field provisions) /3

Thread on some thoughts on @ewarren's plan to demand poor countries meet labor & environmental standards to trade with the US & on @Noahpinion's critique.

1) Yes, Clinton-era free trade agreements caused a multi-decade job bleed from the US, especially in manufacturing
2) Free trade generally benefits lower cost providers. Therefore, a net positive for emerging nations.

3) There are things we could have done to phase in free trade deals, like boost investment & re-training in other industries, to limit the downsides. But hindsight is 20/20.
4) While ALL consumers benefit from lower prices from free trade & much smaller groups of workers benefit from protectionism, it's the job of a nation's leaders to balance the two. That did not happen here. The digital boom abandoned the analog workers of exported industries.

Raab resurrects David Davis' insistence that any backstop must be time-limited, which the EU has previously rejected
Raab sticks to his claim that the Brexit bill is conditional on a future trade deal.

Barnier doesn't seem to agree: "But what is perfectly clear to the EU27 and to EP, is that what's agreed in December and March has been agreed for good"
