Google escapes so much criticism because it sends checks to nearly everyone. I was in a room last where Mark Zuckerberg was rightly being criticized for allowing holocaust-denial content to spread but Google wasn’t mentioned. theguardian.com/technology/201…
Or heard people speak in horror about advertising dollars go to Russia Today without noting RT was literally made into the 2nd most popular news channel on YouTube by Google through its curated “Preferred” promotion signals. nytimes.com/2017/10/23/tec…
And heard concerns about advertising anywhere near opinion content on legitimate news channels despite approaching $100B in advertising going to Facebook, Instagram and other social media which is predominantly “unmanaged” opinion / user-generated content.
Anyway, just shows the blind spot for Google as its current form and practices designed for its own profits are too often considered necessary architecture to the web.

Put simply: Facebook is facilitating the discrediting of news media. The largest political ad campaign on Facebook is microtargeting vulnerable audiences with attacks at press and Facebook is making $ from it, hurting @ewarren’s chances and keeping board member Peter Thiel happy.
Warren is relevant to this point because if she wins or is even the D candidate then Facebook becomes an even larger public discussion than it already is - imagine - and that includes breakup talk.

And Peter Thiel matters because he’s on Facebook’s board, he was reported to have met with Zuckerberg and Trump last DC trip and pressed Facebook not to change its ad policy. Among many other things. foxbusiness.com/technology/pet…

👋🏽there. I would make my same point for every one of @DCNorg's premium publisher members. Buying brand advertising on any premium publisher is worth more than simply targeting eyeballs (or devices/cookies) for clicks. The context of news & entertainment has value to advertisers.
Simply highlighting the Super Bowl which still has one of the strongest economic signals of worth to audiences. Ands this in sports category which remains the most significant sponsorship and brand pipeline (for digital, too). I have some experience in it - 100% digital. Cheers.
Here is some research on value of environment. No doubt, many advertisers will still buy microtargeting of eyeballs even through a middlemen who at times bundle in low-quality inventory. It's their right but there is a difference, yes? adweek.com/digital/ads-pr…

That’s precisely it. The “middle” are for-profit intermediaries (Google being largest) who seek to maximize their own welfare - which has to come from somewhere. The principals (advertisers and publishers) will always lose out over time unless “the middle” works for them.
This is why new data protection rules forcing “the middle” to act as service providers for the publishers are critical. It’s why advertisers demanding to know where their ads and $ end up matters. It’s why shining a light and eliminating opacity and mystery is important.
It’s also why Google using its dominance and data collection machine to thrive on all sides of the market is a key area of focus for House Judiciary, nearly 50 state AGs, Justice Dept and FTC antitrust investigations.
