As the results from HD-28 in Texas come in, it’s worth remembering that HD-28 is competitive mainly because of a gerrymander of HD-26 (which is also a GOP seat). #txlege 1/
That gerrymander split apart Asian communities in Fort Bend County. The initial court-drawn interim map undid the gerrymandering and left HD-26 as a D leaning seat. #txlege 2/
But SCOTUS undid the interim map in 2012 and restored the original (gerrymandered) configurations of HD-26 & HD-28 - which, if tonight’s early results bear out, mean two GOP districts. #txlege 3/
But the reality is that a compact district in eastern Fort Bend Co. could easily be a D district under an un-gerrymandered map. #txlege 4/

Since it’s Rosh Hashanah, a map of where the Jewish population of the United States lives.

But since this map is up, I’ll also use it as a chance to address a pet peeve of mine about people writing about demographics. A short thread 🧵 1/

And that pet peeve is actually two. First, it’s the assumption that what is happening in states like Texas and California eventually plays out elsewhere. And second, it’s that our current understandings of ethnicity remain constant over the long term. 2/
And, sure, both might happen. But then again, they might not. As the map of the Jewish population of the US shows, 100 years after the end of mass Jewish immigration to the United States, a huge part of the Jewish population remained close to where their ancestors started. 3/

So growing up, a fair share of the Asian American adults I knew were Republicans.

And it made sense that people from a group that was entrepreneurial, more socially conservative, & oh, anti-communist to see themselves as Republican politically. But flash forward . . . 1/
That’s completely changed. Asian Americans have moved to become decisively more Democratic over the last couple of decades. I’ve seen the evolution in my own family. 2/
My father was once so Republican that he went to GOP conventions and even had a bit speaking role at one. But he then began to feel less and less at home in the GOP. 3/

On the ballot tonight: 3 special elections for the State Legislature, the Houston mayor's race, and 10 statewide constitutional amendments. Also a ton of municipal elections (both candidate and initiative).
Of the 3 State Legislative seats on the ballot in Texas tonight, 2 are safe D seats (Dallas and Houston) and the third is a formerly solid R seat that was narrowed to 4 points in the 2018 election (Fort Bend county, a Houston suburb). #txlege #tx2019

The campaign finance site owned by Empower Texans did a look back at the 2018 elections on 12/18/18. The question they asked was “Who’s Really Buying Texas?”

The site (again, owned by ET) pushes this “Context matters” point, but then provide a fairly skewed context. They mashed all of the dollars spent in campaigns into one massive bucket. Then they point to themselves and say “see, we didn’t give that much”.

By rolling everything up together, they obfuscate the reality that a handful of large donor groups DOMINATE the political landscape in certain races. It’s not the everyday Texans that drive our politics.

“Tarrant County property taxpayers will be asked on May 5 to loan $250 million to Fort Worth’s controversial land redevelopment project. But that’s not what voters will be told at the ballot box.” #txlege
“The ballot says the $250 million will be used for “flood control and drainage facilities.” Not true. The loan to Tarrant Regional Water District will be spent to turn downtown Fort Worth into an island, a project that’s been limping along for 12 yrs with little to show for it.”
