So growing up, a fair share of the Asian American adults I knew were Republicans.

And it made sense that people from a group that was entrepreneurial, more socially conservative, & oh, anti-communist to see themselves as Republican politically. But flash forward . . . 1/
That’s completely changed. Asian Americans have moved to become decisively more Democratic over the last couple of decades. I’ve seen the evolution in my own family. 2/
My father was once so Republican that he went to GOP conventions and even had a bit speaking role at one. But he then began to feel less and less at home in the GOP. 3/
It started with the evangelical takeover of the Republican Party in Texas. It unnerved him to walk into a state convention and see people on the convention floor on their knees, hands in the air as though they were at church. 4/
Things like Prop 187 also bothered him, like many, because of how deeply anti-immigrant it seemed. He also was angered by things like efforts to cut social security benefits because if there is any Chinese value, it’s taking care of elders. 5/
As for many, it’s hard to leave a political home but when he did it was decisive. In 2006, I asked him who he voted for. He said, “the Democrats.” I said, “You voted straight ticket?” He said, “No, I wanted to go down the ballot & vote against each Republican individually.” 6/
In short, the degree of political malpractice that Republicans have managed to commit in driving groups like Asians and Latinos away from the party is remarkable. And the efforts only seem to be intensifying. 7/
And, my Republican friends, let’s just say, things like this 👇 - especially unhelpful. 8/
