Thread: I think the reason we do not see eye to eye with defenders of #AB5 is that most people associate the "gig economy" with Uber/Lyft/Doordash and nothing more. They don't understand or know the range of industries covered by independent contractors.
From drivers to cleaning crews, writers, musicians, wedding planners, photographers, videographers, composers, hairstylists, graphic designers, etc. IC's cover so many different types of industries outside of ridesharing.
I believe that @LorenaSGonzalez and the writers of the law knew this and were intentionally vague about it to garner support for it. All they scream is Uber Uber Uber is evil and have zero understanding or refuse to understand that there is a growing number of
the population who have figured out how to work outside the box because technology has made that possible. Technology has allowed us to work on our own terms, taking our hobbies, creativity, and drive to the next level. It has allowed us to stay home to raise our children,
homeschool, travel with our laptops and live life on our own terms. THIS is where the disconnect comes from. And the writers of this bill knew precisely what they were doing. They wanted to go after Uber/Lyft without going after Uber/Lyft. How do you do that?
You write a vague bill that will get tons of support because a lot of people don't know someone who works from home other than rideshare. I am here to tell you that when you think you're fighting for the "rights" of Uber/Lyft drivers,
you are doing so at the expense of every other person who doesn't drive for Uber/Lyft. You're doing it at the expense of the moms who figured out how make a business for themselves so they could be home with their kids AND provide at the same time.
Or the guy who bought his own big rig to make that money on the road away from his family months at a time so they can have a comfortable life. Or the small, local theater that provides art and culture to the community with actors, singers, and dancers.
Those are the people you end up hurting when you support #AB5. Uber/Lyft have the money to fight or work around this bill all day long. The everyday person does not.
They either have to move out of California or go work a 9-5 for the man when that's not the life they want to live. I hope that you now have a better understanding of what your support of #AB5 and #HR2474 #ProAct means.
And if you keep supporting #AB5 after all this, it definitely means you're a douchebag. The end.
Ok fine. I let the anger get the best of me on that last tweet. You're not douchebags. But I do hope that you can reflect on the immensely negative impact that #AB5 is having on our lives.
