Thanks @BBCR4Sunday for giving us chance discuss w/ @theclewer the need for #modernslavery field to adopt standard on Freedom of Thought, Religion & Belief. Starts 30m54s bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…
Our 3 year @ESRC study on faith responses found some FBOs already have strong policies to prevent any secondary exploitation or repeating of trauma in how they interact w/ people exiting severe exploitation.
Almost everyone agrees that influencing around religion and belief, including 'mild' forms of evangelising such as sharing materials or offering a lift to church should have no place in person-centred, trauma informed care.
But, almost all orgs and individuals we spoke to could also point to examples where people receiving services had felt obliged to attend church or discriminated against due to their lifestyle, sexuality or views.
This contradicts progressive Christian praxis espoused by many FBOs to promote unconditional care and support, and to facilitate people to make their own choices & develop skills to protect against risks of return to exploitation.
We want to work with FBOs and secular orgs to invite them to lead the field and to set the example by publicly adopting the standard on Freedom of Thought, Religion and Belief & to build this into staff & vol training and public communications.
Please do get in touch if you want to be one of the first orgs to lead the field in publicly adopting this standard and discussing how to implement in daily practice with staff and volunteers.
Our initial findings report and further info about the research and recommendations is here: faithantitrafficking.group.shef.ac.uk/2020/01/24/rep…
