#Germany’s moral authority is currently under extreme duress (to put it mildly).
The role of 🇩🇪 identity & history in its response to #Ukraine has come up again & again.
I have a new piece out that deals with both of these issues (& more)
-A 🧵
The article looks at the thoroughly *international* politics of Germany’s postwar period, from 1945 to the present by looking at the electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk, their mission, context, reception & influence…
Kraftwerk are today widely recognised as one of the most influential band’s in music history – but also as being illustrative of & key actors in a moves to create a new and better German identity after the war.

Last Thursday (s. ; or for the full live stream, s. ), @SevimDagdelen from #DieLinke has discussed with @RaniaKhalek & @EugenePuryear esp. the recently decided & billion-dollar rearmament of the German #Bundeswehr... a result of the #RussianFederation's military invasion of #Ukraine, as officially justified by the #GermanFederalGovernment. A recommendable interview! Besides her opposition to such rearmament & the associated fundamental departure...
...from the so-called „#Entspannungspolitik“ established by #WillyBrand & #EgonBahr for #Germany's relationship with the #USSR (& also its territorially largest & politically strongest successor state in the form of the #RussianFederation),...

Well, here's a 1/13 thread about why #britain thinks it's powerful. We don't know if we're top-table or in the relegation zone #SmartPower.
A leader talks of his country's great past and its magic future. You believe him. Are you wise? 1/
You want your country to top every league table it can.
But maybe he's a charlatan who will take his country down, you’re sure of it.
The leader says he wants his country to be the world-beating number one nation.
Great, but one problem. The world we grew up in is over 2/
Imagine living at the same time after #Napoleon, the Kaiser, #Hitler, the fall of the #BerlinWall when the world order was overturned and a new way of life begun.

Well, that's now.

Every thirty years or so a battle is fought for the future... 3/

1. This election hit me differently this time.

On 9Nov1989 the Berlin Wall came down forever!

31 years now!

I served behind the Berlin Wall for a short time in 1988.

It was an eye-opening experience for a young PFC from a small town in NC.

2. I have many amazing stories and life changing events from working behind the wall.

But, I also saw what leaders like Trump can do to people.

I saw the damage first hand.

I saw how dictators destroy families.

I saw what we were heading for & it wasn't good.

3. But, one thing which stuck with me, during this long four-year battle, is that nothing bad lasts forever as long as good people keep speaking up and fighting for justice!

The people behind the Berlin Wall were hopeful and they never stopped fighting & neither will we.

Remembering @pewresearch founder Andy Kohut on the 5th anniversary of his death today. This @AAPOR heritage interview (w/ @c_deane!) a wonderful way to look back on remarkable life and career. A few highlights for me. Thread 1/n
Andy started his polling career @Gallup because he and his wife needed $650 to pay the hospital fees for the birth of their first child!
Began as a part-time position in evenings while he was doing graduate studies at Rutgers. 2/n.
He left studies because he was 'learning so much at Gallup' and excited by the variety of the work, including marketing research.
Columbia Pictures was an early client, including survey work on the film Easy Rider! 3/n

No one associated with the Trump admin ever had a history class. The #BerlinWall was built by the Russians after WWII to keep East Germans from being in the "free" West during the Cold War. Crowley is too dull-witted to realize she'd be in the isolated East, not free West.
Crowley is literally on the wrong side of history. The #BerlinWall was a symbol of political represssion for decades. I was living in London when it came down and it was an extraordinary moment--the jubilation. So powerful.
What makes Crowley's comment all the more disconcerting is she has advanced degrees from real colleges--including a PhD from Columbia. Which just highlights how being associated with Trump literally makes you less smart, in addition to ruining your karma.

1/8 The fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November, 1989, was one of the most significant events of the 20th century. But why was the Wall built in the first place❓ #BerlinWall30 #BerlinWall
@bbcworldservice 2/8 As political change and civil unrest gripped Eastern Europe 30 years ago, a euphoric crowd of Berliners started to tear down the Wall. What led to that moment? 🤔 #BerlinWall30 #BerlinWall
3/8 Shouts of “the Wall must go” began two years earlier. David Bowie was among the performers at a 1987 concert in West Berlin that led to riots #BerlinWall30 #BerlinWall…

Seen from space, Berlin is still divided by street lighting. 30 years after the fall of the #BerlinWall, the former division between the East and West parts of the city is noticeable from the International @Space_Station. Can you spot the difference?

@Space_Station @astro_tim @ESA_de @esa @ESA_History @ISS_Research @cities4tnight @pmisson @ESA_EO The yellow lights correspond to East Berlin, where orange sodium lamps lit most of the streets today. The white glow comes from the brighter LED lamps in West Berlin. #BerlinWall30
