Cut through halfbaked & halftruth waffle of Johnson statement on future relations & what's left? At end of 2020, there WILL be substantial rupture in EU-UK relations. For many sectors, even if his vision were delivered by 01/01/21, wouldn't differ much from having no deal at all
But of course, his vision won't really be delivered: full tariff free access with no level playing field regime? Oh, grow up. And equally obvious: no serious chance of grown up deal being sorted & in place by 2021. So prudent actors: get ready for delayed Tory Brexit cliff edge
And hearing Johnson pose as champion of global trade, at very same time as setting out UK plan for greatest act of economic segregation in modern history = sort of repulsive Orwellian politics now normalised in Brexitland. Every sane citizen should reject this Kafka-Trump culture

There are lots of things on hold right now. But one day - let's be sure to reckon with how immoral rags like the Telegraph and Mail used this global crisis as a vehicle for their nationalistic, Europhobic propaganda. They have neither decency nor shame. Just poison and hatred.
Not overlooking fact that Mail is seeking to turn victims into perpetrators - a truly disgraceful thing in the current situation, insulting us all, and especially those who are struggling for life or have already lost their fight to survive. These are victims, for f*^'s sake!
The (mostly) optimist in me thinks: will this calamity help show the profound dangers of political charlatans and their hard right organ-grinders? The realist knows: the populist knaves will exploit any opportunity to further radicalise their avid fanbase and further their agenda

PM's Spokesperson: "The UK’s position is the one which secured a significant majority... in the December general election". Untrue: since winning that election, Johnson Government has departed *significantly* from own Political Declaration as presented to electorate in Dec '19...
And worth adding: Johnson Government's plans for wholesale rupture in future UK relations with EU - regardless of whether there is any deal or whether there is no deal - bear no relationship to anything but the most extreme lunatic fringe Leave campaigners during 2016.
Despite their daily efforts to normalise base dishonesty as tool of government, we must never cease to be disgusted & outraged at how Neo-Tories have embraced Trumpian tactics as their own & now corrupt our national life with swivel-eyed glee. If we accept that: it's all over.

H-1Bs don't officially make workers indentured & underpaid; just unofficially. Workers can only switch to other companies that will pay to sponsor visas. Many don't. So:
- That reduced market
- Extra cost
- Transactional friction

Limit their options & pay.
Because many H1B workers arrive without families (or at least extended families), they tend to work longer hours, so companies get more bang for the buck.

👇 I briefed EU27 Ambassadors and EP today on the ongoing talks with #UK. Following the EU-UK statement of 20 Feb, the EU has proposed to the UK a legally binding interpretation of the #Brexit Withdrawal Agreement. Most importantly:
2/5 The arbitration panel can already, under Article 178 WA, give UK the right to a proportionate suspension of its obligations under the backstop, as a last resort, if EU breaches its best endeavours/good faith obligations to negotiate alternative solutions.
3/5 EU ready to give legal force to all commitments from January letter of @eucopresident and @JunckerEU through joint interpretative statement. europa.eu/!Kj44wR This will render best endeavour/good faith obligations even more actionable by an arbitration panel.

Thank you @jillongovt for posting this-must listen. Great to have a focus on the future. Interestingly I disagree with Sir Ivan on his portrayal of the #EU approach to negs- technocratic & run by the theologians & not strategic in summary. @BrigidLaffan
In my view EU had 3 strategic interests to protect in Brexit negs which it has done. 1. Following the portrayal of EU as weak & disintegrating during ref, EU had to assert its centrality in Europe. @BrigidLaffan
2. Membership has to matter/a departing state that wants to retain a lot of the status quo cannot be allowed to do so. 3. The rules based system had to be protected. @BrigidLaffan

Amid reports that #UK PM @theresa_may hopes to renegotiate the "backstop" provision on the Northern Ireland border, let's recall that she already made clear what she wants in her letter to #EU leaders before disastrously losing the #Brexit Withdrawal Treaty ratification vote. 1/
"This could be mitigated by changes to the backstop itself," she wrote to @eucopresident & @JunckerEU "Proposals for a way in which the UK could choose to exit the backstop unilaterally were it ever to come into force, or for a hard time limit... 2/
on the duration of the usage of the backstop, have been raised and discussed in Parliament. We have also raised them previously in negotiations." So there are her proposals, i.e. the EU should basically just cave on backstop in face of House of Commons defeat. But but but ... 3/
