On one hand, you have the socially-minded labour supporting crowd. There is a "rally around workers" effect, often from other workers who realize they could be next or simply recognizing a big labour negotiation like this one will set the benchmark for them in the future. /2
On the other hand, there are the more individualist type or people who are frustrated by the interruption to their lives. Some may have lower salaries and benefits than me and my colleagues and wonder why we should get more. /3

The reason why I left the nuclear industry is because I didn’t want to deal with the battered wife syndrome that the nuclear industry has due to the NRC. There is a strong desire to change, but there is a fear of artificial dependence. The best way to deal with it, leave.

Strikes have been happening since the workers at the Royal Necropolis at Deir el-Medina in Egypt organised an uprising in 1152 BC over late wages.

British industrial action has a much shorter, but turbulent, history. There were withdrawals of labour in the medieval & early modern periods, although these were organised by small groups of craft workers in contravention of legislation such as the Statute of Artificers (1563).
Between 1696-1720s, the Journeymen of Feltmakers negotiated with employers & occasionally called strikes. London tailors did much the same from the 1720s, but the Combination Acts prevented workers combining in a trade union, prohibited such action, & wages were fixed by statute.

Allan Pinkerton was born #OTD in 1819 in Glasgow, Scotland. He headed the Union Intelligence Service during the Civil War and helped lay the foundation for the U.S. Secret Service, FBI, and CIA. He also founded the famed Pinkerton National Detective Agency, which still exists.
Pinkerton emigrated to United States 1842 and founded a cooperage in Dundee, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. He became an abolitionist and operated a safe house for fugitive enslaved people on the Underground Railroad.
Pinkerton was appointed as the first Chicago police detective in 1849 after uncovering a counterfeit scheme. He founded what would become the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1850. The Pinkerton Agency specialized in investigating train robberies.
