I wrote on to Law Review at my law school @AUWCL in 1997. I was the only Black person. There hadn’t been one since the mid-80s. No other Black person when I graduated in 1999. If not for my roommate, I wouldn’t have known what it was.
I didn’t know much about law school before I got there. Did not personally know a lawyer at the time. All I knew was what I saw Easy on The Eyes @BlairUnderwood do on the tv show L.A. Law.
So many Black students aren’t aware of opportunities in certain fields because often times, we are the first.
Thing is, no one tells us that if you don’t do x opportunity, you can’t get y job. Want a federal clerkship? Hard to get without Law Review. But you need to know that.
BLSA is a God send on this. I learned so much from upperclassmen who were willing to share what they knew & help us access opportunities 🙏🏽
If you’re Black, in law school and/or planning to go and have no idea what you’re getting into, reach out to Black Law Students Association. They are a treasure trove of information!
