This week and next week, many 1Ls will start law school. There are plenty of good thoughts out there about tips for incoming students, but I wanted to throw in a few more with some geared toward first generation college graduates and first generation lawyers:
(1) First things, first: congratulations to achieving great success to earn your way to law school.

(2) Get to know your profs and build relationships with them. We're here to help you understand course materials and connect you with folks in the profession-- we enjoy doing it!
(3) There is a learning curve to navigating the law school world, don't worry if it feels uniquely burdensome. Plenty of us felt that way too, and your colleagues will, as well.

(4) If you don't know what something is (like law review, clerkships, etc.)-- don't be afraid to ask.
(5) Keep doing what got you to law school. A lot of your colleagues will stress you out with performative studying-- by that I mean just because they're in the library 20 hours a day, doesn't mean they're studying effectively-- or at all.
(6) Similarly to #5, don't change your lifestyle for law school. Keep working out, keep eating well, keep sleeping regularly, keep visiting family, keep doing whatever makes you happy. Adjust for law school, yes. Abandon your healthy habits, no.
(7) Network, network, network. I didn't know this and I didn't like doing it. I'm much better at it now. Go to social events and get to know your colleagues. Attend firm-sponsored events at your school or in the area. Show up to conferences or local bar association meetings.
(8) Relatedly to #7, find people who are supportive. Don't waste time on friend groups that aren't healthy. Also, don't be a jerk and don't tolerate them. I still remember things people said and did in law school that were not kosher. The legal community is small, memories last.
Last one is to be proud of who you are, where you came from, and where you're going. Enjoy law school and all the possibilities it'll open for your career and you personal growth to think in new and exciting ways. Law school should be an exciting time-- relish in it all!
(And finally learn from me and edit your tweets better. Rambling threads aren't so great sometimes for perfectly constructed sentences)
