So, should you spend 3-4 years of your life doing a PhD? In my opinion, the straight answer is YES, if you get the opportunity. I say this because of three main reasons:
1. Doing a PhD between 2011-2015 helped me understand that there is more knowledge out there than we can ever imagine. I mean, we only know so little and smart people know that they don’t know or they only know so little, and that makes them humble.
2. The research, creative and critical thinking skills you develop while doing a PhD will help you thought life.

3. In Africa and of course other parts of the world, a PhD sets you apart from the crowd. You become an academic elite and a subject matter expert in a certain area.
Having highlighted the above, if you want to earn more in your industry, an MBA is still the surest means of achieving this. This view is debatable.

However, this should not in any way discourage you from getting a PhD if you really want to get one.
I have read several responses to this thread. Just to add that a lot of people do a PhD for several reasons. Some for personal satisfaction, others for the title and recognition while some just want to explore and acquire knowledge. Please do what is best for you.
With an MSc from Netherlands in the 80, my dad went back to Uni to complete a Law Degree. He was already a Director in the Presidency by the time he finished over 12 years ago. My mum also completed a Degree while employed. In both instances, it wasn’t for career advancement.
In the end, this PhD issue isn’t black and white. There are numerous grey areas. Again, please do what is best for you!
