I've told this story before. I'm telling it again. Romney had just lost. We were disgusted with the Democrats and their media enablers, and we were upset with Romney for not pushing back harder.
Romney was not a conservative dream, by any means, but he was essentially a choir boy with respect to character issues. It didn't matter. 47% was distorted. Binders full of women was distorted. He had magic underwear. He put a dog on the roof. He gave a woman cancer.
Harry Reid went to the floor of the Senate and stone cold lied about Romney not paying taxes for 10 years. Reid's later defense: "Romney didn't win, did he?"
The 80's called. They wanted their foreign policy back. Remember? Obama was taking heat from Romney on Russia. That's when Obama asked Medvedev for Russia to give him some "space" until after the election when he would have "more flexibility" on missile defense. Quid pro quo?
The whole affair was sickening. I remember my family sitting around wondering how the GOP could win elections when the media was so unfairly weighted towards supporting Democrat victories.
We thought we knew what strategy would be necessary, but it had one gaping hole: the person needed to execute it would have to be willing to fight - maybe even be a bit of a "jerk".

Our two basic takeaways of what a successful strategy would require?
1) You had to accept as a rule of engagement that Democrat party leaders can NEVER be trusted. They will ALWAYS stab you in the back. You can never be lulled into the trap of "my honorable friend across the aisle". They will always go for power. You have to play their game.
2) The person who was going to head this effort up, who we didn't believe existed in the GOP, had to challenge the media. Not just push back a little. I distinctly remember saying they needed to come to the microphones, point at the media, and say "these people are lying to you".
It had to be a daily, unceasing effort. You had to accept that they would NEVER report fairly on conservatives, so it was time to end the age-old GOP failures of even trying to seek positive press coverage. Just call out the lies!
It's been quite a thing to witness our little family discussion play out in real life, with Donald Trump being the unlikely "jerk" we didn't know we needed.
I don't have to like everything he does or every tweet he tweets to know that the strategy is still necessary and admit that I don't know who else could execute it so effectively.
This is how it has to be until the media either becomes fairer in their approach or at least openly advertises their bias. It's necessary until the Democrat Party begins dealing in issues and policy again instead of accusations.
