Bill Barr knows this judge was never going to give Roger Stone 7-9 years. She’s a middle of the road sentencer. She was always going to give him half that. So Barr asks for half that, she gives the sentence she was always going to give, and Barr gets to pretend he got it reduced.
So who is Barr fooling? Trump, for one. Trump has no idea how anything works. Barr gets to trick Trump into thinking Barr helped Stone.

Barr is also trying to trick you. If you end up thinking he magically won this, you may become demoralized and stop resisting altogether.
People like Trump and Barr are keenly aware of how prone to fatalism our side is. Half the stuff they do is specifically aimed at triggering the fatalists, who then demoralize the rest of us.

When Trump’s side can’t win, they trick us into thinking we lost so we’ll stop fighting

This is so ugly, but here are the salient points:

- Judge Jackson will give Roger Stone the same sentence she was always going to give him

- William Barr will likely be impeached now

- Trump may be impeached again too

- None of this magically helps Trump's weak 2020 prospects
This isn't "optimism." This isn't trying to make you "feel good." This is just reality, based on the available facts, logic, and evidence.

If any of this sounds "optimistic" it you, it's only because you're accustomed to ratings-driven pundits who feed you doomsday hysteria.
You'd have to be almost literally insane to think that Judge Jackson is going to give Stone a shorter sentence to appease Trump, or that this stunt somehow magically helps Trump's 2020 prospects. That's how severely the doomsday pundits can brainwash you with their hysteria.

The media may try to scare you into thinking Trump and Barr have magically reduced Roger Stone's prison sentence. But nothing works that way. Judge Jackson won't play along with it. She'll give Stone the exact same sentence she was going to give him.

We don't know what sentence Judge Jackson will give Roger Stone. But if it ends up being less than seven to nine years, it'll be because she was always planning to give him less than that, not because Trump/Barr interfered with the recommendation. It's just a RECOMMENDATION.
Trump and Barr are hoping that Judge Jackson was already planning to give Stone less than 7-9 years, and that Stone will naively think he got the shorter sentence because they changed the recommendation, so Stone won't seek revenge on Trump.

Trump again reiterates his claim that the phone call with Ukraine was "perfect" and that the impeachment vote is a scam. It wasn't a perfect call and the vote wasn't a scam. He also claims his poll numbers have "gone through the roof." They have not.
Trump appears to believe that "do us a favor" over "do me a favor" is a major distinction that negates the fact that he asked the president of Ukraine to dig up information designed to smear a domestic political rival. (It doesn't).
Trump alleges that the impeachment is a "hoax" that began "a long time ago," even before he came down the elevator at Trump Tower to launch his presidential campaign in 2015. This is a completely made up story.
