Thanks to Julie Smith and Michael Dobbs for hosting a really stimulating discussion with Ameet Gill and me

Big take home: use your voice
Much of our debate this evening was about how social media is changing politics. Both Ameet and I saw both up- and downsides in this, especially when taken in the wider context
However, a lot of it comes down to you using your voice in this new space

It's easy just to let stuff come at you, or to assume that politicians will pander to your desires
As Ameet pointed out, that's not how it works: politicians sell messages that they hope will resonate, and which they hope will turn your head
Your elected representatives always wander along a fine line between leading and following public opinion, and that leaves you with the possibility to make an impact

Expressing what you think does make a difference, especially if you can join up with others who think the same
Remember that politics isn't like the economy: it's not about satisfying your needs, but about meeting the needs of the community

Forget that and you'll not make nearly as much of an impact
