@CourthouseNews @SpeakerPelosi @RepSpeier Full story to come, but Pelosi is now speaking: Millions of women have raised the drumbeat for ratification and reignited the movement to pass the ERA. (See @CarolJenkins for one), she says.

@CourthouseNews @SpeakerPelosi @RepSpeier @CarolJenkins .@RepSpeier has spearheaded H.R. 79 which would remove the ratification deadline and goes to a vote in the House tomorrow. Today she says her message for women is very simple: "We want in. We want in to the Constitution of the United States of America."

"It is a vote for sisterhood, motherhood, survival, dignity and respect," Speier says. "It's a vote for the more perfect union."

Speier: It is a strong msg that US women are done being harassed, assaulted, violated w/impunity. Done being paid less, discriminated against for our pregnancies & being disparaged/demeaned by those who work to subvert those rights, incl. "those in the highest office in the land"

Rep. Carolyn Maloney opens: "There's an old saying, 'women hold up half the sky,' & I would say that's an understatement." ERA is bipartisan, she says. Equal rights under law are "a simple matter of justice." "We will never enforce equal pay for equal work until ERA is ratified."

They represent more than 100 natl local orgs and millions of women and girls who "will accept nothing short of full equality," Jenkins says.
"America is ready for full constitutional equality."

@ERACoalition @CarolJenkins .@SenatorCardin spoke shortly, he supports removing the deadline on ERA ratifictn; he says Senate has votes to support a bill in that body that would remove the deadline (SJ Res 6). Those R votes include @lisamurkowski and @SenatorCollins who have been committed since July 2019

.@LeaderHoyer, w/levity, says no one who watches "Nancy" come down these halls, thinks she isn't an equal. Hoyer has supported ERA since '72. "Usually I get things done a little quicker," he jokes. Warmly thanks women who have worked to finally bring this to fruition.

@LeaderHoyer Rep Brenda Lawrence also delivered moving remarks this afternoon: "A woman's right is simply not up for debate."

In her statements, she noted all of the ways women comprise, serve and ultimately uplift society.

You have been touched by that uplift, "if you have been educated in America," Lawrence remarks. "If you have become ill, whether at your bedside or in a nursing home; if you go out to eat, the majority of your food is prepared by women..."
The list goes on.

The physical, emotional, mental "strength and endurance" put in by women, that is why ERA is critical to ratify, Lawrence argued.

Later, Speaker Pelosi adds to the earlier remarks from Rep Lawrence: "If you are born, you are touched by a woman."

In the end, Pelosi: "When women succeed, America succeeds."
