I know I'm a broken record. But I won't stop fighting efforts by politicians to kill bail reform in NY that simply keeps people charged w/ misdemeanors & non-violent felonies home with their families bc tens of thousands of Black & Brown people should not be caged to win votes.
I won't stop fighting efforts to kill bail reform just weeks after it went into law because we cannot let the same racist fearmongering tactics that bigots like George Wallace & Donald Trump used for decades to create the crisis of mass incarceration now be used to perpetuate it.
I won't stop screaming on here & elsewhere about the dangerous role that the media has played in allowing fear & irrationality to defeat reason. No attempt at nuance. Just reusing the old playbook. Black & white. Good & evil. They're selling sensationalism. Also their souls.
I won't stop fighting against attempts to kill bail reform bc of the grotesque exploitation by police of crime victims. I know they don't care about them. They use them to maintain power. Crime victims overwhelmingly support reform & have demanded police stop using them as props.
How can I stay silent when the politicization of incarceration is so transparent? Perhaps clearer than ever. 8 months ago lawmakers listened to reason & overwhelmingly supported the law. It's been a little over a month into new law. Complete 180. Only difference: Politics.
I'm not going to stop fighting because it literally could not be clearer that the carceral response to societal ills thats been the go-to policy for a half century has failed miserably. We have decades of proof. But we're not willing to give an alternative even some months?
Ok, but I am going to go to sleep now. I'll leave you with a ton of other reasons why I will keep fighting that I've learned as a public defender. Bail reform will not lead to mayhem. We've seen it in practice. It saves lives & money & keeps society safer. nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-ope…
Still awake. Enraged by how easily politicians negotiate away Black lives. I looked up “enraged” on twitter to see when last I used the word. Was in October. Fearmingering over bail reform had already started. 2 months before law went into effect.
