How would you fare on this Life in the UK practice test? (I failed, badly, with 54%. The pass mark on the real thing is 75%.)

Once you've taken a crack at it, and seen the questions and your result, it will really make you wonder what the test was *actually* designed for.

It's almost as if it were an endurance test (intellectual ultramarathon?) designed deliberately to weed out all but the keenest.
"Can you recite the Lord's Prayer backwards, in Latin?"
"Can the British do *that*?!"
"Silence! Do you want to be integrated, or not?"

That's what the test feels like.
By contrast, this is the Australian one. I got 90%, and I've been to Australia once for 2 days...

If your curiosity is still piqued, Amazon are selling the latest edition of the official study guide to "Life in the UK", as put out by the Home Office. The actual tests applicants have to sit is based on knowing all the material in that book.

Our departure has left them with a £62 billion hole in their budget. Tensions accurate or exaggerated - who knows? When resolved, our negotiating position will weaken still further.

One of the key contentions of Brexiters (absurd though it is) is that the EU will fold without our cash. EU has already stepped in and replaced the UK's contribution to the European Investment Bank. Once they work out how to replace our budget contributions too, it's game over.
The problem from the UK's perspective is that the EU of 2020 is not the EU of 2016. In general, EU citizens feel much more positive about the EU than they did 4 years ago. So while they'll gripe at their country having to pay more into the EU budget, they'll blame us not the EU.

Have you noticed how many stroppy Leavers spoiling for a fight have stopped trying to claim Brexit will be good, and are instead hammering the "EU is falling apart" nonsense for all they're worth?
The hoary old "we may go to pieces, but they'll get there first" argument. Fact-free, of course.
"Our GDP growth may have stalled at 0%, but [insert random EU country] fell 0.1% so we were entirely justified in putting 47 years of international relations in the shredder..."

Yes, their thesis really is about as weak as that!

I can just see the scene in a few months' time:

BJ: "So..." [turns to Defence Secretary] "what are we going to do about it?"
The footage in the clip is far worse than anything that emerged from the "celebrations" around Parliament on the night of 31 January. At least the people then weren't running the country. Whereas this lot have their grubby mitts all over the levers of power...

I'm 41. First got interested in politics aged 8 or 9; the first general election campaign I recall in vivid detail was in 1992. And even before that, I knew enough to dance around the classroom when Thatcher's resignation was announced.
Given when I was born, I spent my entire childhood under a Tory government. And when Labour offered socialism in 1983, or what was still viewed as socialism by very many in 1987 and 1992, it got trounced. Just as it was trounced in 2019.

1/ It’s simple to note: One has to subtract before adding. Give up what’s bad, before thinking about adding what’s good. True for habits, food, news and everything else.

We’re consuming:
- More info/news/entertainment
- More food
- More social networking
- More things to-do/work...

…than prior generations. It’s making us lazy and critically, disengaged.
#life 3/ It’s unclear what the signal to noise ratio is - it’s a function of one’s own consumption habits.

And separately, we’re prone to setting additional goals too:
- Read good books
- Eat a healthy diet
- Have fewer but better friends
- Work smart
