"‘Fighting like ferrets in a bag’ as EU tries to plug Brexit cash hole"

Our departure has left them with a £62 billion hole in their budget. Tensions accurate or exaggerated - who knows? When resolved, our negotiating position will weaken still further.

One of the key contentions of Brexiters (absurd though it is) is that the EU will fold without our cash. EU has already stepped in and replaced the UK's contribution to the European Investment Bank. Once they work out how to replace our budget contributions too, it's game over.
The problem from the UK's perspective is that the EU of 2020 is not the EU of 2016. In general, EU citizens feel much more positive about the EU than they did 4 years ago. So while they'll gripe at their country having to pay more into the EU budget, they'll blame us not the EU.
Of course they'll be right to do so. Brexit is something we've inflicted on them, not something the EU27 engineered or pushed for.

So once they've resolved their differences, fixed the budget etc., all that will be left is resentment at our having put them in such a situation.
