The story of how this happened is bizarre, and involves the occult beliefs of Ronald Reagan, decades of conspiratorial beliefs aimed at vulnerable populations, and a gospel that perverted Christian beliefs of charity and justice into a movement obsessed with endless power.
Trump has been a part of this movement since its beginning and was a fervent follower of Norman Vincent Peale. His ostentatious lifestyle of obscene wealth has been one of the hallmarks of worship of profit and power. That he became its faulty messiah is shocking but predictable.
People like myself who grew up in this cult of power and wealth and white identity are often unaware of how the faith was perverted and turned into its fascist state. It keeps believers removed from the truth, like any cult, and moves quick to excommunicate anyone who questions.
One of the keys to understanding how we got here is to understand how American evangelicalism became a white identity, Neo-Confederate movement and how that created this paranoid, chaotic world of conspiracy theories and fascistic power grabs.
