A cynic might figure that you're data's going to wind up in China anyway, once big silicon gets done with it. They may as well pay for it up front instead of pretending some govt agency or European authority will make sure it isn't "inappropriately used".
Once they see you naked what has been seen cannot be unseen even if they give you back your clothes, which they won't. So our data should be treated as property from the git-go. Once it passes into big silicon's possession, presume that it's been consumed.
"We are the product". Almost everyone admits that. If so we should get paid. If China can get Equifax and OPM why should we think some agency can keep them from getting a list of your Facebook photos?
One way to create a market for personal is the Open Curtains scheme. There are probably other ideas. Some may be better. This is simply one of them.
